Responsible and sustainable farming is in Unifrutti’s DNA. From the outset knowing how to care for the soil, plants, land, and surrounding community has been a priority. Taking care of the environment is crucial to Unifrutti’s operations and thus has always been a focus.

In each territory Unifrutti subsidiaries are responsible for identifying and supporting community driven initiatives as well as parterning with established and internationally recognized efforts in CSR.

Unifrutti South Africa helped to open a kindergarten for the children of workers of the Sun Day Valley in collaboration with the Thembalethu Association, which operates to mitigate the effects of AIDS and reducing poverty in many African countries. In the school, over 130 children in the community of Addo participate in educational activities in a safe and secure place, have lunch and spend the afternoon engaged in activities rather than on the street.

Unifrutti Philippines established the Unifrutti Foundation, providing education opportunities for underprivileged children as well as providing work training in a number of fields to workers. Unifrutti are active members of a cooperative, which provides training in blacksmithing, herbal planting, poultry raising, and hog fattening, among others. The efforts in these areas have helped the community become interdependent and self-sufficient.

Beyond social and community initiatives Unifrutti is a member of several global initiatives including the Rainforest Alliance, SIZA (Sustainable Agriculture In South Africa), and adheres to strict guidelines to ensure food safety and sustainable practices set out by programs such as HACCP, PPECB, and BRC Global Standards.

All these efforts are made to ensure lasting benefits for the surrounding communities in which Unifrutti operates helping to conserve natural biodiversity, soil fertility, water cleanliness and general well-being of the earth so that future generations may carry forward in the same pioneering spirit.
